Heritage Expeditions new voyage to retrace Nordenski?ld?s Vega Expedition of 1878-80

Small ship expedition cruise company, Heritage Expeditions has released the details of a new voyage, inspired by Swedish explorer Adolf Nordenski?ld?s Vega Expedition in 1878-1880.

The voyage, ?In the Footsteps of Nordenskiold: Through the Northern Sea Route,? is scheduled for departure from Murmansk, Russia on September 12, 2021 and will return to Pevek on September 30, 2021.

The Russian research vessel, Akademik Shokalskiy has been made to withhold the extreme temperatures of the Arctic and has already completed a double transit of the Northern Sea Route. Prices start from ?10,500 for a main deck, twin sharing berth accommodation.

Heritage Expeditions commercial director and expedition leader, Aaron Russ said, ?The new addition to their 2021 Russian Far East season was aimed at true adventurers, with an interest in the remarkable history, geography and wildlife of the uncompromising Northern Sea Route.?

Mr Russ added, ?This is an authentic expedition in every sense. In the Footsteps of Nordenski?ld...recreates one of the world?s great explorations, visiting the many islands and locations Nordenski?ld himself discovered and described during his history-changing expedition.?

Created in consultation with Heritage Expedition?s Russian history experts, the expedition offers intrepid travellers the opportunity to explore some of the least known and seldom visited shores on the planet, including the Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago, the New Siberian Islands, Novaya Zemlya (New Land), Cape Chelyuskin, De Long Islands and the Nordenski?ld Archipelago. Those seeking wildlife will encounter the region?s polar bears, walrus, whales, ivory gull and others.

The new voyage has been added with amendments to the Heritage Expeditions? Russian Far East 2021 schedule, according to which, the Sea of Okhotsk expedition will now start and end in Magadan, allowing guests to enjoy an extended time, exploring the wildlife-rich waters.

Guests joining this departure also have the option to stay on board for a complimentary ocean voyage, as Akademik Shokalskiy is transferred from Magadan to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy at the completion of the voyage, and three extra nights on the seas will be free, with minimal expedition programmes, allowing guests to unwind in the library, bar or on the bridge.

Sea of Okhotsk, with a round trip from Magadan, departs June 17, 2021 and arrives back on June 27 or June 30, 2021, for guests disembarking in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. Prices start from US$7,100 for a main deck, twin share berth accommodation
