A survey by CLICKSCENE Ltd has revealed how cyberspace can be a lonely place for 39% of UK travel Websites – who get only family and friends visiting them. 

The research showed that more than a third of travel portals are failing to attract users from either online advertising or the free listings on Google and other search engines and found that 86% of the travel Websites are failing to do any pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on the internet.


Of the 1,185 UK registered travel Websites tested, just 155 (13%) had embraced PPC advertising, such as Google AdWords, as a means of getting their name, Website address and marketing message in front of customers searching for their product.

Some 39% (463 sites) do not get any visitors from either PPC or “natural” or free search engine results, which means that the only people visiting these Websites will be those who already know the actual Website address.

The company has developed a new patent pending system that examines the content of Websites and how they are featured on the internet. Taking about two minutes to complete, the system suggests changes that can be made to the sites to attract extra visitors and potential customers and is offered for free.

The company's managing director, Andrew Willis, said: “The internet is an everyday part of life for most people now, but in general, businesses haven’t quite got it yet. There were about a million new domain names registered in the UK in 2010 but if nothing changes the vast majority of those will be very lonely places indeed.

“Making the most of the internet as a sales channel is an excellent way to accelerate our growth out of the recession. That’s why I created the Website improvement system, so that the people behind these sites can easily see what they need to do to get more sales or leads from them.”
