Finland Petays WTMThe Finnish Lakeland area, which includes the regions of Hameenlinna, Jyvaskyla, Lahti and Tampere, is being promoted at WTM as a year-round destination, either in conjunction with trips to Helskini, the capital, or as a destination in its own right.

Speaking to Travel Bulletin at WTM, Juha-Pekka Tuominen, CEO and owner of Petays Resort, said the Lakeland area has "a lot of water and history", with more than 100,000 lakes.

The new concept being promoted at WTM is combined itineraries, such as a five-day option which allows visitors to see Helsinki's major attractions on a city break with additional days spent in the Lakeland area.

At the resort, Mr Tuominen said there are 20 activities on offer, including fishing for crayfish and learning how to cook them, as well as excursions such as glass blowing and visits to medieval castles and churches.

In winter, Mr Tuominen said "all is frozen ... you can walk on the lakes, go dog-sledding and snowmobiling, and then from the beginning of March, the days get very long - it is a beautiful time of year."

As well as the traditional accommodation options, there are tents suspended between trees available, with guests keeping warm using "thick sleeping bags", Mr Tuominen said.
