Expanding its portfolio of itineraries, Viking River Cruises has announced the launch of its first route along the Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde Rivers in Southern France, with the first sailing scheduled for March next year.

The eight-day cruise will begin and end in Bordeaux, giving passengers the opportunity to take in the city’s architecture, cafes and museums. Visiting the historical towns of Pauillac, Blaye, Libourne and Cadillac, the itinerary stops at three UNESCO sites, including Blaye’s 17th Century Citadel and Saint-Emilion, and takes in the scenic landscapes as it sails along the rivers.

Named the ‘Heart of Bordeaux’, the itinerary will also appeal to foodies, with plenty of opportunity to enjoy the regions specialities such as oysters, truffles and cognac, along with a selection of wines.

Onboard enrichment programmes include learning to make caneles, a caramalised custard pastry; appreciation of Bordeaux wines with the guidance of a master sommelier; and brushing up on conversational French.

The operator's managing director Wendy Atkin-Smith said: “We are very excited to launch such a fantastic new itinerary, especially as it is a route that isn’t covered by many other companies. The new addition goes a long way in showing our commitment to continually expanding our portfolio by adding new and exciting destinations for our customers to explore.”
