Valentine’s Day surprise for Aegean flyers as new A320neo takes to the skies

From Natalie Chalk in Athens

Aegean Airlines' newest plane takes to the skies today on its first flight from Athens to Munich.

Straight from its spectacular unveiling, the airliner with a blue and white tail makes its Valentine’s Day departure, with passengers receiving surprise presents. As part of the inaugural celebrations, each traveller will receive a dessert and inside ten of them there will be free tickets to fly with Aegean to any of its 155 destinations.

More than 700 people turned out in the Greek capital on Wednesday to see the A320neo unwrapped at a glittering aircraft-hanger ceremony.

Broadcast live on YouTube, an impressive laser light show ended with the revealing of the first of the new fleet.

The plane marks a new era of growth and modernisation as the airline enters its third decade.

The Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stood alongside Aegean executives, cabin crew and the world’s press to cheer as they saw the plane at Hanger 57.

The aircraft is the first of 46 ordered by the company as part of a $6.billion investment. It’s hoped that each additional aircraft will make a contribution to Greece’s economy, employment and tourism industry.

The new blue and white livery was inspired by the Greek sky and seas.

Keen to get onboard, hundreds of employees queued for selfies and to snap the first pictures of the cabin interior.

Onboard there are no backseat screens but instead a mounted facility that allows passengers to attach their own tablet or phone to use the wifi service.

The A320neo reduces CO2 and NOx emissions while also lowering the noise footprint. It also increases fuel efficiency which will enable the company to fly to new destinations.

The chairman of Aegean Eftychios Vassilakis and CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis said the airline's continued focus would be on passengers and delivering quality service.

Talking about the recent Coronavirus outbreak, Vassilakis said: “There has been no major impact here but we are looking forward to it being contained.”

Gerogiannis said: “2020, signifies a new beginning, with a new dynamic, new potential and new identity for Aegean. For all of us, the new aircraft represents primarily a platform that enables our people to work consistently towards creating a better travelling experience for our passengers.”

By July, the airline will have received six new planes. The order is expected to be completed by 2025.
