UK is now second most important source market for Germany

The UK is the second most important source market for incoming overnights to Germany, as per the statistics from the German National Tourist Office (GNTO).

Only the Netherlands, with its adjoining borders, is above the UK.  Despite a small drop of 0.5% in actual overnights for the month of February by visitors from the UK (compared to the same period in 2018), the UK has increased its market share to 7.2%, up 0.09% from January 2019, ahead of the USA and all other European markets.

Ireland continues its strong upward trajectory with an increase of 5.6% in overnights, compared to February 2018. Overall in 2018, UK visitors to Germany showed an increase of 4% in overnights and from Ireland, a 7.6% increase in overnight stays.

The 2019 Travel Trends report released by ABTA in December 2019, identified Europe as the number one destination UK holidaymakers want to visit in 2019. Germany is increasing its appeal as a year-round travel destination and research has shown it to be the no.1 cultural destination for Europeans. City breaks, castles, parks and gardens, nature and active holidays are all particularly indicated as reasons for travel by visitors from the UK and Ireland.

Beatrix Haun, director, GNTO UK and Ireland said: "As these latest statistics show, visitors from the UK and Ireland are hugely important for Germany and the market not only looks stable, despite challenges in the travel industry, but is showing increases too! There are so many cultural connections between Germany and the UK and Ireland; visitors can not only look forward to a memorable holiday to suit their tastes and budget, but a very warm welcome too.?
