Technology tethering to boost safety in hotels post-COVID-19

Agents may have to make their customers aware of new safety procedures in hotels, as a report from Global Data highlights the ways the hotel experience will change in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic

Hotels have already started preparing for what the industry may look like, when the demand returns to pre-pandemic levels and the tourism sector may undergo some permanent changes, through the use of advanced technology.

Ralph Hollister, travel & tourism analyst at GlobalData, says: ?The increased use of no-touch technology may become permanent, across a range of operations in hotels. The use of automation in the industry has been growing swiftly in recent years, but many more touchless options will be introduced due to COVID-19. We might start using contactless fingerprints, instead of room keys, or the use of iris and face scan for checking into a hotel.

?The increased use of service robots to reduce the frequency of human contact in a hotel, may also be implemented by larger chains. The use of service robots in the hotel industry is on the rise, and has been for several years. Now, with the need to reassure potential guests, that their stays will safe through minimal social contact and human interaction, service robots may now be seen as less of a gimmick and more of a necessity?, he adds.

Major hotel chains have been planning for ways in which they can reduce their recovery period and run all hotel operations smoothly. Guests can expect the use of robotics and other forms of advanced technology during future hotel stays.

Hollister concludes: ?Although there will be an initial expense, the introduction of advanced technology will limit the frequency of human contact in hotels and that will act as a key unique selling point. This strategy will also build a positive sentiment around a company?s image, as they will be seen as acting proactively to ensure guest safety.?
