Regent Holidays has been featuring Tehran and the main cities of Iran for several years, but from next year the programme will include eco-lodge stays in Golestan National Park and a tiny guest house in the remote northern village of Garmeh.

One of the new tours for 2017 is the 14-day ‘Highlights of Northern Iran’, which begins in the northern city of Tabriz before heading east to the mountainous Azerbaijan province, bringing opportunities to explore traditional villages, drive along the Caspian coast, explore the Golestan National Park and the Dasht-e Kavir desert, finishing in Isfahan, 340km south of Tehran.

Beyond the cities, the accommodation offered throughout the tour comes with no frills but does bring the opportunity for explorers to get to know Iranians and to understand their way of life.

In the village of Masouleh, guests stay overnight in a local house; in Golestan National Park, home for the night is an eco-lodge; in Damghan, between the mountains and the desert, there’s a homestay; and in Garmeh, a guesthouse will offer a warm welcome to visitors.

Prices start from £3,385 per person based on two sharing, including flights with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, breakfast accommodation, most meals, transfers and tours with an English-speaking driver/guide.
