PortAventura World promises to become plastic-free by 2020

PortAventura World has committed to eliminating plastic usage in its parks and resort by 2020 while it continues its efforts for a sustainable future.

The family leisure and holiday destination resort has incorporated into its business strategy different initiatives aligned with the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact, the largest international initiative for corporate social responsibility.

From January 2019, the resort will replace the plastic straws that come with many of the drinks at the resort (1.5 million units) and the bubble wrap used to protect the souvenirs in the park shops with paper. Also, the company will gradually replace disposable materials used in its self-service restaurants with more sustainable alternatives.

The company’s global sustainability strategy also includes a commitment to the use of clean energy. During 2018 the resort has been successful in obtaining 100% of its electricity supply from renewable energy sources without CO2 emissions.

Fernando Aldecoa, general manager of the resort, said: “The corporate responsibility of PortAventura World is based on a responsible leadership that always balances economic social and environmental objectives. We set ourselves a goal to be the first European park that eliminates all the plastic in our destination resort.”
