New York State launched its Responsible Tourism Programme at WTM on World Responsible Tourism Day.
Gavin Landry, executive director of the Empire State Division of Tourism, responsible for the 'I Love New York' programme in New York State, was at WTM to launch the initiative and deliver the award for 'Best for Water Conservation' which was sponsored by 'I love New York'. The New York State guide and itineraries have been produced in partnership with responsibletravel.com
Governor Cuomo said: "This initiative will continue New York State’s history of pioneering environmentally responsible tourism.
"From our millions of acres of protected wilderness where New Yorkers can hike or kayak, to our vast network of parklands, New York is truly unmatched when it comes to opportunities for sustainable tourism. On top of all that, these assets support eco-friendly jobs and growth in local communities, and ultimately reinforce the value of preservation.”
The guide provides an overview of the culture, history and ecology of each of New York's regions, as well as practical information on public transport, eco-friendly activities and accommodation. An easy-to-navigate format invites eco-oriented travellers to discover many lesser known and authentic aspects of New York State such as the Amish culture or a bicycle ride along the former Erie Canal tow-paths.
