Great Rail Journeys is encouraging agents to promote Russia as a 'once in a lifetime’ destination and says that Moscow and St Petersburg are the destination's main draws.

The company's marketing manager, Richard Adams, said: “In terms of iconic rail journeys, nothing beats the extraordinary Trans-Siberian Express – at least nothing beats the experience of travelling along that route in the luxurious Golden Eagle private train.” For its 2011 programme of river cruises by rail, the operator is highlighting a new ‘Waterways of the Tsars’ cruise along the Volga-Baltic waterway, with departures in May, June and September next year. The cruise offers a choice of ten shore excursions including Uglich, the ‘Golden Ring’ city of Yaroslavl and the village of Goritzy, Kihzi Island – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It costs from £3,185 per person, based on twin share and includes all travel, most meals, transfers, flights, taxes and charges, plus the services of a tour manager.
