The carrier now serves 43 destinations from Manchester, making the airport its largest departure point.

The carrier's head of planning, David Neill, said: "We were surprised to discover there wasn't a direct service from the north to Vienna and following research, we discovered it was a service very much in demand; in fact, we had more than 8,000 bookings prior to the launch.

"Vienna offers something for everyone year-round - from city breaks in the summer, to taking in Christmas markets in the winter, and demand from business travellers is also strong. The three-times weekly service operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at convenient times for city break passengers."

Flights depart at 14:15 to arrive in Vienna late afternoon and return early in the evening. Lead-in fares start from ?43 one-way including taxes and sister company, Jet2holidays can organise accommodation and packages.

The airline has also announced that it will be launching flights to Bergerac, Jersey and Fuerteventura later this year.
