Innsbruck gets set for Christmas festivities

The traditional Christmas magic festivities light up Innsbruck from November 15 through to January 6, making the city a festive must-visit venue.

Medieval streets filled with twinkling lights, traditional brass bands, festive punch and freshly baked local specialities such as Kiachl (doughnuts), fruit breads and Stollen, set the scene for an Alpine wonderland. The seasonal spirit is complemented by traditional Advent concerts, Krampus parades (when demon-like creatures from Alpine folklore parade through the streets in elaborate costumes), nativity scene displays and regular visits from St. Nicholas.

There are a total of six Christmas markets in central Innsbruck including the Advent in the Marktplatz (pictured), located on the banks of the River Inn and home to 60 Christmas market stalls with a Tyrolean village feel, open from 11:00-21:00 daily between November 15 and December 23.

As flight examples, fares with British Airways from Heathrow, departing on November 29 and returning on December 2 lead in at ?108 return, while easyJet is offering flights from Gatwick on December 2, returning on December 4 for ?80.23. BA also offers adjoining flights from Manchester to Heathrow.
