It is with great sadness that I confirm that Haiti has been badly affected by Category 4 Hurricane Matthew. Initial reports from the Ministry of Interior confirm that 208 people have been killed, and over 200,000 have been displaced. We expect these numbers to rise dramatically.
The Haitian government was able to set up pre-hurricane shelters which received over 50,000 people. Unfortunately, many people did not want to leave their houses.
On Thursday 6th October 20016, the government and people of Haiti distributed 200 tonnes of food to areas including the people of Les Cayes (south) Petit Goave (west), and Jeremie (south west). This will continue and increase to the areas presently not accessible.
We are working to assess the damage and the needs across almost 1/3 of our country. This will take time. Once this has been established, we will be sharing our top priorities with the NGO community and the people of the United Kingdom.
In the meantime, we would like to thank you for your concerns and support. Haiti has a long road to recovery, but together we can make it happen – ansam ansam nou kapab.
Mesi ampil (Thank you very much)
