Following a sustained period of research, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation has launched a new ratings scheme that seeks to recognise hotels and other accommodation providers that go above and beyond the legal requirements set out by the star rating system.
Following an initial trial period the label will also be applicable to catering establishments.
The Cyprus Tourism Quality Label (www.cyprustourismquality.com) is awarded to businesses that ‘apply proven good quality management practices and provide improved service quality standards and facilities, over and above the legal requirements of their specific official classification’.
Application for the label is on a voluntary basis. Once they have applied, establishments are then appraised via a two-stage process, with Stage A looking at fundamentals and Stage B rating client experience, with the latter assessment carried out through a ‘mystery guest’ inspection.
Evaluators take into account a range of criteria - from hospitality to health and safety and environmental sustainability. Reflecting Cyprus’ commitment to responsible tourism, emphasis will also be put on aspects such as the level of promotion of local character, support of local businesses and waste management. Where applicable, labels are then awarded at two levels: Gold and Silver.
For visitors to Cyprus, the CTQ quality label denotes added value in terms of improved quality of services and facilities.
The CTO's chairman, Angelos Loizou, said: "As the official national authority tasked with the classification and licensing of all hotel and catering establishments we already work with businesses to ensure they meet the legal requirements of the star ratings, but we often found that hotels exceeded these criteria. Having evaluated similar tourism quality schemes, we have developed the new label which seeks to highlight qualities which aren’t necessarily reflected in the star rating and which rewards establishments that go beyond the brief."
The quality label scheme is open to the 75% of accommodation establishments in Cyprus that are rated three-star and above.
