Battered Suitcase explores Kakadu and Kimberley in new tour

An 18-day discovery of the Kakadu National Park and Kimberley region in Western Australia has been put together by Battered Suitcase.

Created for independent travellers with a sense of adventure, the private tour takes in the diverse landscapes and wildlife of the ?Outback?.

Located in a protected area of the Northern Territory, Kakadu covers an area nearly half the size of Switzerland. Renowned for the richness of its Aboriginal cultural sites, the entire National Park was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and borders the Kimberley, one of the nine regions of Western Australia. Due to its isolation, the Kimberley?s landscape with its old rock formations, rivers and vast savannahs, remains an undisturbed natural area and both regions are home to a variety of wildlife, as well as fresh and salt water crocodiles.

As a suggested self-drive itinerary, The Kakadu and Kimberley discovery tour begins in Darwin and finishes at Broome, taking in a variety of experiences including guided safaris, a crocodile cruise, a visit to the City of Ruins and Gregory?s Tree ? a large boab that stands on the campsite occupied by explorer Augustus Charles Gregory in the 1850s and considered a sacred site by the local indigenous people.

Accommodation is with smaller, privately owned providers unique to the region, ensuring an immersive and personal experience. These include a safari bungalow at Bamurru Plains on the edge of Kakadu overlooking the floodplains frequented by a mass of bird animal life; contemporary Cicada Lodge, which opened in 2013 in Nitmiluk National Park; and Bullo River Station, a 500,000 acre cattle ranch. Nights are also spent at the El Questro Homestead with panoramic views over the Kimberley?s Chamberlain Gorge; Drysdale River and Mount Elizabeth cattle stations; the Mornington Wilderness Camp nature reserve and Spinifex Hotel in Derby.

Available until October, the tour costs from ?5,547 per person and includes hire of a large four wheel-drive, air-conditioned vehicle with maps and full documentation; 17 nights? accommodation; most meals and some drink, plus selected guided tours. International and local internal flights can be arranged but are not included, and itineraries can be tailored to suit individuals.
