Clients can discover Malta and Gozo’s history on a bespoke seven-day tour created by Battered Suitcase.

With 7,000 years of civilisation, the Mediterranean islands offer an abundance of cultural and artistic treasures and events, as well as a choice of land and water-based activities, local cuisine and wine, music, theatre and luxury places to stay.

The journey includes options on full-day, half-day guided and self-guided tours, plus meals and evening entertainment.

Recommended highlights include the islands’ World Heritage Sites of Valletta, Malta’s fortified capital city; the Hypogeum, an elaborately decorated underground temple hollowed out of solid rock dating back to around 2,500 BC; and the Megalithic Temples on Gozo. These are said to be the oldest free-standing monuments in the world, pre-dating Egyptian pyramids by more than 1,000 years.

Guided full-day excursions can also take in Malta’s medieval capital of Mdina with its palaces and nearby Rabat, which claims to be where Maltese Christianity began. This tour includes a visit to St Paul’s Catacombs used for underground burials during the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

Prices start from £550 per person on selected departures in 2017 including flights from a London airport; transfers in Malta; and six nights’ breakfast stay in a central five-star hotel.
